Intro to Calligraphy Workshop

CTRL Collective DTLA (map)

Have you ever wanted to learn calligraphy? This is a comprehensive but easy-going introductory workshop for pointed pen calligraphy. Students will learn the essential concepts of calligraphy using an oblique dip pen and a flexible nib and create a solid base that they can build on. They will acquire an understanding of the main tools and proper techniques of traditional copperplate lowercase and uppercase alphabets in this 6 hrs. workshop. Students can continue to improve their skills outside the class with an included calligraphy practice kit.

The workshop includes:

  • 6 hours of instruction with Aspacia Kusulas
  • 1 Calligraphy Kit:
    • Oblique pen holder
    • 2 Nibs
    • 1 Inkwell with sumi ink
    • Paper pad
    • Gum arabic
    • Guidelines and exemplar sheets
    • Booklet with exercises and exemplars
  • Light refreshments & snacks.

This workshop is recommended for anyone who is curious about trying calligraphy for the first time or for those who are serious about learning but don't know where to begin. It is especially good for artist and designers looking to incorporate a new skill or style into their practice or for groups of friends looking for a new hobby to share in.

While the workshop is aimed at total beginners (you just know it as beautiful writing) it is also perfect for anyone with previous experience who wants to reaffirm proper technique.

Recommended for students age 16 and older.

NO previous experience is required!

Join us as we hear from the man himself, Hugh Kretschmer.

Hugh Kretschmer is a Los Angeles native who grew up in a family of artists, discovering photography at 13 under the guidance of his father, who was a photo-instrumentation engineer for McDonnell Douglas during the Mercury through Apollo missions. Recognized repeatedly throughout his 22 year career for his work's enduring (and endearing) use of metaphor and hand crafted, trick-the-eye elements. Kretschmer has achieved singular success as an editorial and advertising photographer, who creates imagery that applies to both art and commerce. He is represented by Renee Rhyner & Co. in North America, and Trayler and Trayler in Europe for his commercial work, and by Fathom Gallery in Los Angeles for fine art.
